For parents: preparing for your trip to Malta
We are delighted you have chosen Travel Class for this experience. This article answers the most common questions that arise before departure and during the first days of the programme in Malta.
Documents required
Malta is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area. Spanish citizens do not need a visa or any electronic travel authorisation to travel to Malta.
Valid passport or national ID card. Spanish citizens may enter Malta with either a valid passport or their national DNI identity card. Check that the document covers the entire stay.
Travel authorisation for minors. Minors travelling without both parents require a signed authorisation from the parent or legal guardian. This should be notarised if possible and carried alongside the minor's travel documents.
Travel insurance. Travel Class offers the option to arrange travel and medical insurance at the time of booking. If you have included it, you will receive the policy documents before departure. If not, please ensure your child has private medical cover for their stay in Malta. EU citizens may use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC/TSE) for emergency treatment, but a private policy provides broader coverage.
Arrival at the airport
After passport control and baggage collection, a transfer representative will meet the group. In the case of individual transfer, a driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall with a sign showing the student's name. Students will travel directly by coach to the school, where check-in, room allocation and a campus tour will take place. If arrival is late in the evening, we recommend packing a snack for the journey as the dining hall may be closed. The following morning, school staff will present the internal rules and the week's programme.
Classes
On the first day, students sit a placement test to be assigned to the most appropriate level group. Classes begin the day after arrival. Only English is spoken in the classroom. The first few days can be demanding as students are required to communicate constantly in a foreign language — this is an essential part of the learning process and, while it can feel challenging at first, progress is usually very visible within the first week.
Money
Malta uses the euro, so no currency exchange is necessary. We recommend each student carries between €100 and €150 per week for personal expenses, optional excursions and small purchases. A bank card (Visa or Mastercard) is the most practical option and is accepted almost everywhere. Cash can be withdrawn from ATMs widely available across the island.
Excursions
The programme typically includes a full-day excursion on Saturdays and a half-day excursion mid-week. Additional optional excursions are usually available on Sundays, costing approximately €20–€60. We recommend setting aside some money for these.
Health
Malta has a warm Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and sunny, with temperatures between 28 and 35°C. Please inform Travel Class of any medical conditions your child has before departure, and send any regular medications clearly labelled and handed to the accompanying staff on arrival. In the event of any health issue, the group leader or school monitor will arrange the appropriate medical care.
What to pack
Luggage must not exceed 20–23 kg depending on the airline (please check in advance). We recommend including:
- Light summer clothing (28–35°C in summer)
- Sun cream, sunglasses and a sun hat — essential
- Swimwear and towel — there will be beach or pool visits
- A light layer for air-conditioned classrooms
- Comfortable walking shoes and flip flops
- A small day backpack for classes and excursions
- A notebook and pen
Malta uses standard European two-pin plugs (Type C/F), the same as in Spain — no adapter is needed. Bedding is provided and changed regularly. Laundry facilities are available on campus (approximately €2–3 per load).
Communication
All campuses have free wifi. On arrival at the airport there will be internet available so your child can let you know they have landed. If you would like them to have mobile data, a local SIM card can be purchased at any phone shop. Alternatively, an EU roaming plan from their Spanish provider will work normally in Malta.
We wish your child an unforgettable experience!
